Aligning Technology Decisions with Business Strategy

John Pomposello has over 30 years of experience across telecommunications, digital infrastructure and enterprise technology. His background spans network advisory and technology strategy, helping organizations optimize technology environments and make informed infrastructure decisions.
A Career Inspired by Technology As a child, I always knew I wanted to build a career in technology. I became involved with computers at an early age and developed a passion for technology that has stayed with me throughout my career. I have been fortunate to watch communications and digital infrastructure evolve from the days when AT&T was the only company in town to today's internet-driven world. When you do what you love and make the right decisions, the universe will help you out and put you in a good place. Understanding the Current State before Designing Solutions Helping clients make technology decisions starts with understanding where they are today. Without understanding the current state, it is difficult to recommend the right solution. For most organizations, technology is just one part of the equation. People are another major factor. Even as we adopt different levels of AI and a range of platforms, it's still humans who make organizations work. Technology adoption depends on understanding what employees can adopt and implementing solutions that make their jobs easier rather than forcing change upon them. “Technology is a tool. You must figure out what you are building before you start buying and using tools.” I often think about the saying, ‘measure twice, cut once.’ The same principle applies when developing a technology roadmap. It is important to spend time understanding the client's business, technical requirements and existing environment before defining the problem to solve. Navigating the Complex Technology Landscape One of the biggest challenges technology leaders face today is understanding their existing digital infrastructure while navigating technology options. Even common technology requirements often come with hundreds of providers, pricing models and contract terms, each with different advantages and trade-offs, making informed decisions difficult. These transformative decisions establish the foundation for future business operations, like pouring the foundation for a house. Today's digital environment is borderless. Users expect secure access to information, applications and services from virtually any location and on any device. Like many technology advancements, AI will also change jobs. The next digital divide will be between those who embrace it and those who do not. Organizations should approach AI with a well-defined strategy. Technology is a tool. You must figure out what you are building before you start buying and using tools. The Infrastructure behind Tomorrow’s Connectivity Digital infrastructure has become the central nervous system of the global economy. As organizations continue to modernize, the network will remain fundamental to how people securely access information, applications and services. The edge is wherever people are. While wireless technologies evolve from 4G to 5G and eventually 6G, fiber will continue to provide the foundation that supports those networks. Data centers are also changing where digital infrastructure is deployed. As organizations look for locations with access to power, hyperscale campuses and other data center developments are expanding. This is driving demand for new metro, long-haul and undersea fiber infrastructure to connect these facilities. Advice for Emerging Leaders Your personal brand matters. Be mindful of what you say, what you do and the commitments you make. Equally important is building meaningful relationships. When you connect the right people, experiences, and information, you create opportunities for better decisions and more impactful outcomes. Stay committed to continuous learning. Take time to learn about your company, understand your competitors and make use of the knowledge available through podcasts and conferences. We live in a world with tremendous access to information, which provides opportunities to learn from experts. At the same time, avoid getting distracted by the constant noise and stay focused on what matters the most.
