Effortel Technologies has been recognized by Telecom Business Review Magazine as the exclusive recipient of “Top 5 BSS/OSS Solutions Companies in Europe – 2024,” based on our proprietary methodology, reflecting its position in the industry. This profile has been developed by the Telecom Business Review research and editorial team based on insights from an interview with Martin Petkov, COO.
Martin Petkov, COOThe year was 2006. A group of seasoned entrepreneurs and telecom professionals, led by Arkadi Panitch, launched a global brand—Effortel Group—to transform telecommunications into a universally accessible market.
“Telecoms and mobile services are as essential as the bread and butter in your consumer basket, a necessity at every given point in time,” says Martin Petkov, COO of Effortel Technologies.
This realisation ignited a quest to partner with a major retailer to create a global brand that would be part of the retailer ecosystem. This pursuit led them to Carrefour, a prominent international retailer and together, they formed a venture to launch Carrefour Mobile.
The vision was clear and bold—establishing a globally recognised mobile brand in Carrefour stores.
Telecoms and mobile services are as essential as the bread and butter in your consumer basket, a necessity at every given point in time
Undeterred, the team established Effortel Technologies to support mobile virtual network operators worldwide, enabling those who lacked the financial resources or technical expertise to launch a mobile business. By offering a technology enablement unit as software as a service (SaaS), the firm helps telecom organisations of any size improve their established brands with mobile services. This strategic insight proved accurate, as the firm identified and capitalised on the emerging wave of startups in the mobile virtual network operator market.
The technology enablement unit addresses the critical challenges MVNOs face, such as operating in highly competitive environments with limited budgets and managing substantial costs similar to those of traditional mobile operators.
With approximately 30 per cent operating margins, MVNOs also faced the challenge of building profitable businesses by purchasing airtime wholesale from classical operators. Effortel Technologies addressed this by enabling them to operate efficiently with minimal staff, manage large customer bases, and adapt swiftly to market changes.
Effortel Technologies further transformed the industry by leveraging internet-era innovations in data management and automation to simplify the complexities of telecom business support systems. The firm streamlined operations, reducing the need for extensive manual processes like resource allocation, customer rating, billing and revenue assurance. This enabled MVNOs to lower operational costs and overcome market entry barriers, fostering success even on thin margins.
An Evolution through Firsthand Experiences
An essential aspect of Effortel Technologies’ journey is constant self-improvement. It actively scouts the industry through the network operators it runs. The firm began as a virtual operator and maintains a vertical for mobile virtual network operations. In 2008, it established itself as a mobile virtual network enabler (MVNE) in Belgium, Italy and other locations. Effortel Technologies tests its solutions through its MVNO operations, learning from its mistakes and experiences. These lessons are then applied to the technology provided by the enablement unit, creating unique selling points for its MVNO customers.
Effortel Technologies’ relationship with its customers is also a critical factor contributing to its success. It actively engages with the customer community, embracing feedback and suggestions for product adaptations to better address their local needs. This open dialogue ensures that its research and development (R&D) roadmap aligns with client requirements, enhancing the relevance and effectiveness of its technology.
Its customer-centric approach is intertwined with its key pillar—innovation. The company holds several patents in the telecom industry and continually seeks to simplify, improve and reshape business support systems, yielding unique solutions to common problems and enhancing efficiency and customer satisfaction.
In addition, Effortel Technologies’ ecosystem is open-source, allowing customers to contribute plugins to the system. The firm encourages clients and their developers to contribute to certain platform aspects. This open-source aspect enables clients to independently enhance features and capabilities without incurring additional charges for change requests.
The firm’s business model follows the “pay as you grow” approach, which lowers customers’ initial technological entry barrier and allows them to focus their budgets on marketing and sales. As clients’ businesses expand, Effortel Technologies’ revenue grows alongside them, fostering a symbiotic relationship.
A Journey of Merging Telecom with Environmental Initiatives
A compelling example of Effortel Technologies’ impact is a recent success story involving a client with an innovative vision—merging telecom services with sustainability initiatives. The client aimed to create a platform that raises awareness of the carbon footprint associated with mobile phone usage. They proposed an application allowing users to monitor their CO2 emissions in real-time and offered ways to offset these emissions, such as planting a tree for every new subscription.
Developing the application was a challenging yet rewarding experience for Effortel Technologies. The team ventured into sustainability calculations, a reasonably new avenue and designed a platform that enables users to monitor their mobile phone’s CO2 emissions and participate in reforestation programs. This collaboration highlights the firm’s ability to help clients achieve their ambitious goals while embarking on a journey to become a net-zero company.
Beyond these efforts, Effortel Technologies also assists customers in achieving maximum cost efficiency in a highly competitive mobile industry. With eSIM technology allowing global companies to offer online subscriptions without local sales teams, competition has intensified alongside rising inflation rates, making cost-consciousness crucial for telecom companies. The firm addresses these challenges by prioritising cost efficiency and automation. Its solutions are carefully crafted to help its clients navigate competitive pressures through streamlined operations and reduced overheads. For instance, an anti-churn component works in the background to retain customers, eliminating the need for a dedicated churn management department.
With responsibility to customers as the primary commitment, Effortel Technologies emphasises honesty and transparency, ensuring clients understand the platform’s capabilities and limitations clearly. Its relationship with clients goes beyond a mere sales transaction to ongoing support. Over time, the company adds value by sharing insights and acting as a watchdog for its clients, always looking for opportunities to improve operations or avoid potential pitfalls.
Effortel Technologies’ narrative is one of relentless innovation and adaptability. By focusing on cost-efficiency and sustainable growth, the firm has transformed how MVNOs operate, making it possible for many companies to enter and succeed in the telecom market. Its journey from a simple idea to a global enabler of telecom services is a testament to having a clear vision and a solid dedication to customer success.
Petkov captures this ethos well, “We recognise that it’s essential to build up a relationship with our client and invest in this relationship over time. Because the success of our customers is our success. That’s what we stand for. That’s what Effortel is".
