AI opens the door to address that increased network availability by detecting and optimizing complex systems gradually. It can also adapt new service definitions made possible by just-in-time restoration. However, to realize this innovation potential, we need to monitor the optical infrastructure on a large scale. This turned into a tangible reality thanks to advanced coherent technology, which provides significant data without needing additional hardware.
Companies use fiber to detect nearby mechanical events, such as an excavator starting to dig, to help prevent fiber cuts.
Modern optical variable bit rate transponders transmit data on both orthogonal polarizations of light. Their receivers monitor changes in these two polarizations to correctly decode the transmitted information. The receiver can monitor these fluctuations by reconstructing and tracking the so-called state-of-polarization (SOP) thanks to present filters used in advanced digital signal processing.
Identifying Event Signature
AI-enabled machines can learn patterns in a way that no other machine can. They can be qualified, for example, to classify and distinguish between people's signatures based on handcrafted marks. Several letters in a signature, the existence of an underline, and the space between two letters are all characteristics that can be classified.
Companies can employ these capabilities to help similarly prevent fiber cuts. One can begin by gathering thousands of SOP measurements to populate the AI database. Each SOP measurement lasts about two seconds and acts as a signature, allowing companies to identify a specific type of event.
SOP measurements determine event categorization by easily interpretable features, such as the minimum amplitude value required for a given measurement period.
