FREMONT, CA: To expedite advancements in open RAN (radio access network) technology, some of Europe's largest operators have collaborated to create a report that outlines the priorities for the technology in the current year. This collective effort to progress open RAN involves Deutsche Telekom [XETR: DTE], Orange [NYSE: ORAN], Telecom Italia (TIM) [NYSE: TIIAY], Telefonica[NYSE: TEF], and Vodafone [NASDAQ: VOD].
An Open RAN MoU has been released, which highlights the progress made in the areas of maturity, security, and energy efficiency of Open RAN technology. The report also addresses the challenges and questions raised by the technology. In order to ensure collaboration with all industry players, five telecommunications companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding earlier this year.

Vodafone has been advancing in the implementation of Open RAN technology, and recently presented a prototype of its 5G network-in-a-box product that complies with Open RAN standards. The company has also announced plans to deploy this technology on 16 mobile masts located in Devon, UK, which were outlined in December. More accurately, the report delves into three key areas; maturity, security, and energy efficiency.
It accounts that the technology void between traditional RAN and Open RAN is terminating, with several Open RAN deployments taking place in the UK and North America recently, helped by government support.
Open-RAN Notes Security and Energy Efficiency Progress
With all five telcos cooperating with the relevant national authorities to share information on the security, implementation, and management of Open RAN, security is also a key factor.
The telecommunications companies have made a request to officially incorporate Open RAN into the Groupe Speciale Mobile Association (GSMA) security assurance scheme, Network Equipment Security Assurance Scheme (NESAS) and the EU's 5G certification program established by European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA). This request was made in anticipation of the upcoming GSMA Mobile World Congress event.
The Open-RAN Alliance, plus 3Gpp security specifications define all five operators as having applied mandatory control. To ensure the established standards and regulations to follow, the telcos have been following a zero-trust approach to every vendor. With particular emphasis applied to radio transmitters and cloud infrastructure, the telcos are seeking to increase the energy efficiency of all the Open RAN components.
The level of energy efficiency in Open RAN radio units is comparable to that of conventional RAN. However, there is a possibility for improvement through the use of dynamic sleep mode, which adjusts power consumption based on the actual traffic demands. Advancements in CPU and accelerator technologies, as well as improvements in server cooling systems, have been the primary drivers of progress in enhancing the energy efficiency of cloud infrastructure.
The operators have suggested a comprehensive plan for monitoring energy usage in all relevant components of the Open RAN system, which includes real-time reporting, automated tools, and methodologies to improve efficiency. Open RAN deployment pilots are planned for the present year, ahead of full-scale developments across Europe by 2025.
