DevOps in the context of telecom
A single organization or firm discusses or considers DevOps. DevOps is a set of activities that unites software development and IT operations to shorten the development and delivery cycle and improve software quality. According to the software-as-a-service (SaaS) model, the company typically develops the software, manages it, and provides it to consumers. In this setting, it is easy to have complete command over the entire flow, including complete awareness of the deployment environment.
In contrast, the telecom industry often employs the as-a-product (aaP) business model, in which network software suppliers, such as Ericsson, build software and provide it to communication service providers (CSPs), who implement and run it within their network. This business model necessitates additional considerations.
Network software vendor development teams need help understanding the target environment, which is a big difference between the typical DevOpsSaaS approach and the telecom AaP model. Each CSP constructs and chooses its own cloud infrastructure in the telco industry, so it is inevitable for SaaS companies to deploy and manage their software on several different cloud environments.
Implications of a multi-cloud and hybrid strategy
CSPs increasingly adopt hybrid and multi-cloud strategies through partnerships with hyperscale cloud providers (HCPs). Two architecture scenarios for deploying telco workloads were presented in a recent article in Ericsson Technology Review, showing how telco workloads can be deployed in tandem with enterprise and consumer applications on a CSP's cloud infrastructure or in dual-stack architecture. This strategy could result in great diversity and variability among network software providers' deployment targets.
