Responsibilities
The main duty of a telecom consultant revolves around the management, supervision, and provision of technical guidance on telecommunications systems.
They function with end-users of these systems to recognize needs and requirements and help mobilize existing technology to meet their criteria.
A Telecom Consultant is also a strategic planner supporting customers by designing cost-effective and efficient communication systems that successfully fulfill current and future telecommunications needs. They also keep and update these systems as the latest technology becomes available.
Moreover, they are responsible for documenting telecom plans, inquiries, activities, and specifications and reporting on them.
Telecom Consultants can function on various projects – small or complex- from installing and maintaining email systems, database networks, and wireless systems to even the capability to transmit data via satellite.
Daily tasks of a Telecom Consultant:
• Management, supervision, and offering technical advice on telecommunications systems
• Obtain feedback, identify user needs and requirements, and mobilize present technology to meet their criteria
• Documentation of plans, inquiries, activities, and stipulations, as well as reporting on them
• Programming functions, designing networks and systems and assigning resources as needed.
• Handle the installation of network infrastructure equipment, including switches, routers, wireless, and security appliances at client sites

Telecom Consultant Skills
To effectively work with communication systems and devices, a candidate is familiar with telephone and data cables, lines, circuits, digital computers, and all associated systems and devices.
Essentially, they are technologically savvy and enjoy staying up to date on the latest advances in IT and technology.
As a Telecom Consultant works with teams to support and determine appropriate requirements, the role requires exceptional personal communication skills and, perhaps more significantly, excellent listening skills. Project management is another talent that a prosperous Telecom Consultant should have.

Skills required:
• Practical experience with all telecommunications systems, comprising peripheral devices (e.g., computer networks, fiber optics, on-site controls, data modems, connections, etc.)
• Working knowledge in telecommunications, floor plans,
• Cable/conduit routing, equipment rack layouts, and data center projects are strongly preferred.
• Virtualization & SAN experience
• Understanding of Autodesk Revit and the ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs
• Knowledge of network infrastructure technologies – i.e., Cisco
• Knowledge in planning and knowledge of ArcGIS or QGIS
• Intimacy with MS Office and databases
• Adequate interpersonal and organizational skills
• Project management and problem-solving skills
• Team player with customer service orientation
• Ability to provide hands-on technical support
Background
Telecom Consultants have a wide range of academic backgrounds. While many people entering this industry usually benefit from on-the-job training, most employers expect applicants to have an associate degree or higher in telecommunications, electronic engineering, computer science, or a related field.
A Master’s degree in Business Management can also benefit this field of work.
