FREMONT, CA: A smart antenna comprises several antenna elements, and the signals from these antenna elements are processed to take advantage of the mobile radio channel's spatial domain. Most of the time, the signals received at the different antenna elements get multiplied by complex weights and then added together. Adaptive refers not to the antenna but to the whole system, including signal processing. Some campuses are evaluating adding private wireless networks to their connection ecosystem. In a traditional time division multiple access (TDMA) or frequency division multiple access (FDMA) cellular system, carrier frequencies used in one cell cannot be used in neighboring cells because the co-channel interference would be too strong. The exact frequencies get used farther away. Reuse distance D/R is the distance between two base stations that use the same carrier frequency. The length is related to the size of a cell. Cluster size N or reuse factor is the number of cells using different carrier frequencies. Each user needs a signal-to-noise-and-interference ratio (SNIR) of lODb.

A smart antenna is only used at the base station and not at the handset or subscriber unit. The remote radio terminals send signals using antennas to pick up signals from all directions. It is up to the base station to choose which signals to send and which ones to ignore. Most of the time, the received signal from the antenna elements spread out randomly multiplied by a weight, which is a complicated adjustment of amplitude and phase. When these signals are put together, the array output is made. An adaptive algorithm changes the weights based on goals already set.
For a simple RF environment, a simple antenna works. Their brains are in the places where they process digital signals. In adaptive antenna systems, the essential ability to process signals enhance by advanced techniques used to control operation in many different operating conditions. It helps signal gain by providing inputs from multiple antennas combined to get the most out of the available power and cover a given area. Focusing the energy sent to the cell improves the base station's range and coverage. Because the phone needs less power, the battery can last longer and be smaller and lighter.
Antenna patterns can face co-channel interference sources, which improves the ratio of received signals to interference. It increases capacity as there is precise control of signal quality and reduction of interference, along with reusing frequencies to shorten the distance, making it possible to send more data. Spatial diversity helps in the information from the array being combined with other information to reduce fading and other harmful effects of multipath propagation. Multipath rejection can reduce the channel's effective delay spread, making it possible to support higher bit rates without using an equalizer.
