The economics are different from urban builds, where more customers can be served across shorter distances. The CRTC has already allocated about $769 million to broadband projects that serve more than 54,000 homes across more than 320 communities. It also says the fund has supported nearly 6,000 kilometers of fiber construction across the country. These figures show why fiber construction remains part of Canada’s wider infrastructure agenda. The Government of Canada is also continuing to use the Universal Broadband Fund to expand access. A June 2026 announcement for Manitoba described new rural and remote broadband funding and repeated the federal commitment to ensure every household in Canada has access to high-speed internet by 2030.
