They are an evolution of the electrical grids of the past, which were not designed to address the present environmental issues.

Miniature sensors embedded in crossing lights on one side of the road continuously monitor the adjacent side's sidewalks. If the sensors 'noticed' a person carrying the app waiting to cross after hitting the button, the green light would stay on for longer. Barcelona, for instance, employs tens of thousands of wireless sensors to monitor air quality and vehicle traffic. In Oslo, the streets are lined with 65,000 intelligent LED lights that dim or brighten according to the area's illumination demands. Such improvements are made feasible by wireless antennas, which allow city authorities to link to thousands of sensors, enabling remote energy management and monitoring on a massive scale.
A vast array of wireless options are available for SMART grid applications.
