TEM encircles managing enterprise mobility (comprising mobile device management), cloud (including hybrid cloud), unified communications, SD-WAN, the internet of things, and much more.
FREMONT, CA: For ages, many small and mid-sized enterprises under $1 billion in annual revenue have dodged contracting with a Telecom Expense Management (TEM) vendor who tried to carry out the same functions and activities to an equal measure using spreadsheets.
These organizations generally have been reluctant to spend on a TEM provider, not realizing the benefits they would gain far exceed the financial outlay. Generally, these firms would also save money after fees since they would avoid costly, often recurring, mistakes.

Hence, when one asks, “Why Should I Utilize A TEM Provider other than spreadsheets?” the answer is this: TEM has grown into far exceeding just telecom. These days, TEM encircles managing enterprise mobility (comprising mobile device management), cloud (including hybrid cloud), unified communications, SD-WAN, the internet of things, and a lot more – all while keeping traditional telecom in check, too. Therefore, consider TEM as Communications Lifecycle Management (CLM), a holistic way to the telecom, mobility & information technology environment.
Another main reason spreadsheets do not stand in for true TEM is that organizations, specifically smaller ones, often lack the resources to manage contracts and lifecycle independently. For example, automation and specially developed software can accurately track agreement expiration to prevent tariff rates, device upgrades, and other important change dates.
However, spreadsheets further do not necessarily, or easily incorporate plugins for monitoring order implementations or flagging modifications in invoice amounts against contracts. Also, the element of human expertise remains paramount. And consecrating a full-time employee or two just to contract and lifecycle management is impossible for many end users.
Small and mid-sized enterprises, hence, miss opportunities for significant cost savings. Still, a CLM provider can step in to deliver expertise, containing enterprise architecture design that balances cost-effectiveness and business needs, optimizing portfolios and negotiating carrier contracts, and conducting ongoing invoice audits that identify errors and recover erroneous charges.
Another facet to consider is that utilizing spreadsheets rarely, if ever, generates soft savings. For example, spreadsheets do not provide interactivity that allows customers within the organization to submit tickets or requests; therefore, spreadsheets do not create higher customer pleasure with the telecom, mobility, or IT department.
Spreadsheets also do not monitor for and spontaneously implement changes in compliance requirements, for instance, or issue reports that point toward increased savings or efficiency.
On the other hand, CLM vendors do all this and manage all aspects of the lifecycle from procurement to payment to the help desk. As a result, these vendors take on all these tasks to create operational effectiveness and produce the soft savings that numerous full-time equivalents would create at less cost and in less time.
As technology changes, spreadsheets do not suffice. Therefore, partnering with a TEM vendor makes sense. A TEM vendor has more particular resources than enterprises, specifically smaller ones. A TEM vendor has the people, processes, technology, time, relationships with carriers and suppliers, and joint knowledge and experience at the ready.
Preferably, a TEM provider will work with clients on a fully managed basis – meaning, the customer does not have to concentrate energies on administering the communications environment and can instead accompany strategic projects. The TEM provider, in this case, acts as an expansion of the client’s telecom, mobility, and/or IT business unit.
Until small and mid-sized enterprises realize how working with a TEM vendor built to help them will improve operations, assist the achievement of business goals, and even create revenue, they will remain stuck in patterns that keep them from achieving the same levels of effectiveness as their larger peers.
