A LPWAN(low-power wide-area network) is a wireless network that allows devices to communicate over long distances with very little power. LPWANs are usually used in applications requiring devices to communicate over great distances but where power is confined, such as in sensor networks or the Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
One of the key advantages of LPWANs is that they can significantly expand the battery life of connected devices. This is because LPWANs use very little power to send and receive data, so devices can remain in standby mode for longer.
LPWANs are also very suited to applications where data needs to be transmitted over long distances, as they can conceal much larger areas than another wireless network. One of the most famous LPWAN technologies is LoRa, which is utilized in several IoT applications.
The other two important LPWAN technologies are ZigBee & Z-Wave.
Vehicle to Everything (V2X)
A vehicle-to-everything (V2X) system is a wireless communication system that enables vehicles to communicate with each other and with infrastructure and other devices. The system is designed to improve road safety and efficiency by reducing traffic congestion and accidents. V2X systems use dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) to exchange speed, location, and direction data. The data is then used to improve traffic flow and safety.
In September 2019, the U.S. Department of Transportation advised that it would need all new cars and trucks to be fitted with V2X technology in the future. The decision was according to a study that found V2X systems could impede up to 80% of all car accidents. The study also shows that V2X systems could save fuel by decreasing traffic congestion.
Critics of the mandate argue that V2X technology is costly and that the benefits do not vindicate the cost. They also argue that the technology is not yet prepared for widespread use. Nevertheless, supporters of the mandate debate that the advantages of V2X technology are too great to ignore.
Software Defined Radio
An SDR(software-defined radio) is a wireless device that can receive and transmit radio signals through software instead of hardware. This allows it to be reconfigured to support different standards and frequencies, making it a versatile tool for radio enthusiasts and experimenters.
SDR technology has been around for numerous years; the new trend shows that SDR can be employed for complex applications and replace expensive hardware chips with sophisticated software algorithms.
SDRs are becoming progressively popular as technology matures and hardware costs fall. They provide several advantages over traditional hardware radios, including the ability to be easily upgraded and extended with new features.
One of SDR's key benefits is its flexibility in terms of compatibility. In essence, an SDR can operate with any wireless standard. Consequently, it can be used with legacy systems and the latest technologies.
Another benefit is that SDRs can be reconfigured to support diverse modulation schemes and frequencies. This makes them immaculate for use in situations where the radio environment is constantly changing, such as emergency services or disaster support operations.
Finally, SDRs provide a high degree of integration. This enables them to be built into laptops and smartphones, where they can take advantage of these devices' processing power and storage capacity.
